Independence Day
“The Bible is intended for the government of the People, by the People, and for the People.” John Wycliffe wrote this on the preface of the first English language Bible which he had translated in 1382. Echoed by Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg five centuries later, this was the heart and soul of Independence Day.
Mankind is capable of self-government as prescribed by his Creator. Moses and David delighted in God’s laws, statutes, and precepts. No potentate, dictator, or oligarchy is necessary. The black-robed regiment of pastors in America understood it. “No king but King Jesus!” was their rallying cry. But John Adams cautioned us: “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
What happened to the America many saw disappearing before their eyes? Atheistic Marxism found its answer in Darwin’s flawed evolution. A bewildered religious people separated the world into a spiritual and a natural realm. Content with spiritual evangelism and worship they abdicated their civic responsibility in the natural world.
We have seen the results. No-fault divorce legalized in 1955, prayer banned in public school in 1962, abortion legalized in 1973, and physician assisted suicide increasingly accepted in state legislatures.
God tells us through Isaiah that the government shall be upon the shoulders of His anointed one, the Christ. And Christ has said “The thief comes only to steal and kill and to destroy: I have come that they may have life and have it in the full”. Let us reclaim this promise with a Constitutional Life Amendment that includes and protects the unborn child. This is the heart and soul of Independence Day.
