Where is America now that Roe, Doe and Casey are overturned?
After nearly 50 years the unbelievable happened: The United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton and Casey. Before we go back to our daily lives believing that all is well, we must understand that the overturn of the terrible 1973 ruling doesn’t make abortion illegal in all 50 states. A Constitutional Life Amendment is necessary to complete the protection of all unborn babies no matter what state they are in. Why should a baby die on one side of a state border and live on the other?
Why did President Lincoln fight for an amendment to the Constitution against slavery? Didn’t the North win the civil war? Weren’t the slaves freed after the Emancipation Proclamation? Lincoln recognized the necessity of a Constitutional Amendment in order to guarantee the abolishment of slavery in every state. Amendment 13 was passed in 1865.
Why did the suffragists work so hard for over 70 years for a Constitutional Amendment allowing women to vote? At that time it was up to each state to pass legislation that gave women the right to vote. Just as with abortion at this time, a woman could vote if she lived on one side of a state border and couldn’t vote if she lived just across the border. In 1920 with the 19th Amendment all women could vote.
These two examples and many others show that a victory needs to be complete before celebrating. Turning the question of abortion back to the states to decide still makes the killing of preborn human beings made in God’s image legal in the U.S. according to each state’s laws. God hates hands that shed innocent blood and what is more innocent than a baby in the womb? As Scripture says, “The Lord is slow to anger, and of great mercy.” Psalm 145:8 Let’s pray the Lord holds off his anger while we complete the protection of all babies in every state.
Passing pro-life legislation is important but legislation passed by Congress or in each state can be changed every election cycle. Many argue that it is usually very difficult to get an amendment passed. There have only been 27 in over 200 years. But as with the amendments mentioned above, Constitutional Amendments are worth working for.
What pro-life leaders and organizations say:
Franklin Graham, “I will continue to support wholeheartedly the pro-life cause. I want to see abortion eliminated from every state, not just some. Abortion is a genocide of the unborn. It is sin.”
Eric Scheidler – Pro-Life Action League, “My thoughts keep coming back to my father (Joe), and the role he played in bringing about this victory. He and the League never let the American people or their elected representatives forget about the violence and injustice of abortion.”
Bob Cielnicky, Director, Life Amendment Coalition, “Overturning Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton is a giant leap forward for the Life Amendment which would end legal abortion in America forever!”
Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, “What is unacceptable is to leave millions of unborn children and their mothers across half the country completely at the mercy of the abortion industry and its allies, while brutal abortions up to birth continue unchecked — keeping the U.S. in a club of extreme outliers with China and North Korea.”
Alveda King, “The younger generation, including African Americans, are more aware that injustices are occurring in this nation. They also understand that abortion is an injustice and a civil wrong.”
Alexandra Snyder, CEO, Life Legal Defense Foundation, “The Supreme Court, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, held that Roe v. Wade must be overruled because ‘the Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.’“
Dr. Marie Willke Meyers, “Dad always said he would not live to see Roe overturned, but his children would.” Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Willke were pro-life leaders from the beginning.
Mark Crutcher, President, Life Dynamics Incorporated, “When you and I made a commitment to fight for the unborn, we accepted that the battle would not be easy. But after almost 50 years, and against incredible odds, we have finally arrived at a place of new opportunities. Although the victory God promised is not yet here, for the first time in our history we may be seeing it on the horizon.”
Star Parker, President, CURE, “Although in the 1850s the country was deeply divided on the issue of slavery, one would be hard pressed today to find anyone who would agree with Douglas that democracy and the vote should decide whether slavery would be permitted. I predict that history will take the same course regarding our increasing awareness regarding the sanctity of life and our responsibility to protect the unborn. But clearly we are in for the long haul.”
Matt Staver, Founder and Chairman, Liberty Counsel, “Roe v. Wade is dead! This global earthquake will resound through history. As Justice Samuel Alito wrote, ‘Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak and the decision has had damaging consequences.’ While this is a tremendous victory, the fight for life now returns to Congress and the states. And that battle is intense. If we don’t fight and win, we will lose this historic opportunity to protect God’s children.”
Bradley Mattes, President, Life Issues Institute, “Roe v. Wade inflicted a death toll nearing 64 million babies and an unknown number of women who perished by botched abortions. Millions more silently struggle with profound grief and shame, including fathers. Roe gave birth to a pro-life grassroots movement without rival. It began in cities and small towns and evolved into the prolife movement it is today.”
Jeff White, Founder, Survivors, “We are in a different fight than before Roe fell. Now we are in a fight for the very soul of our nation!”
Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life, “Pro-abortion radicals are prochoice – as long as that choice is abortion.”
Mark Harrington, Created Equal, ”The global implications of overturning Roe should not be understated. Abortion advocates worldwide are scrambling to deal with the fallout of the world’s largest democracy reforming its abortion policy.”
Troy Newman, Operation Rescue, “It’s always been our goal to rescue the babies sentenced to die today. We needed to overturn Roe V. Wade. So obviously
today is a fantastic day. We mark it as a victory in battle, but we haven’t won the war.”
Pastor Al and Judy Howard, His Nesting Place, “Today marks history friends, today LIFE WINS! Please keep our ministry, church and pregnancy centers in your prayers against threatened violence.”
Brian Johnston, Western Director of National Right to Life, “ The right to life is the most important idea that you can consider because this gift of God, our lives, is the reason governments come into existence. For this reason ‘governments are instituted among men,’ said our Founding Fathers, to protect the inalienable rights that we’ve been granted.”
Lila Rose, Live Action, “This is the most critical time for the pro-life movement – I hope you will take life-saving action today!”
Kristan Hawkins, President, Students for Life of America, “The time has come for the Pro-Life Generation to lead the way forward with an America without Roe v. Wade.“
Pro-life Action Ministries, “The evil black cloud of Roe has been lifted from our nation. That brings hope and a revived confidence we can start to win.”
American Life League, “Stay focused on the baby in the womb and fight to save all babies.”
